Breaking of Super-Critically Incident Internal Waves at a Sloping Bed

چکیده
A laboratory experiment was carried out to investigate the mixing on a sloping bed caused by a localised ray of internal waves breaking with super-critical frequencies. Previous work has shown that for near critical waves the turbulent boundary layer was confined to a thin region just above the bed. As a result, relatively small overturning turbulent lengthscales were observed. On the other hand, larger turbulent lengthscales and more mixing occurred at moderately super-critical waves, consistent with some earlier laboratory results. Calculation of the energy budget of the incident and reflected wave rays showed the vertical diffusivities as high as 10-4 m2 s-1 observed in field studies could be realised by the internal wave breaking process at the boundaries.

Along-Slope Current Generation by Obliquely Incident Internal Waves
Numerical studies of internal wave reflection from sloping boundaries are presented. Previous work (Slinn and Riley, 1996, 1998a, 1998b, 1999) has restricted attention to internal waves that approach the bottom slope in a plane normal to the boundary (normal incidence). This work extends the scope of the three-dimensional time-dependent numerical experiments to examine internal waves that appro...
متن کاملEdge waves along a sloping beach
Standing on a gently sloping straight beach, it is a matter of observation that various waveforms propagate on the surface of the sea. Among these we find edge waves water waves that progress along the shoreline. These waves, often difficult to visualize (this has, probably, prevented the regarding of this waveform as important for a long time), are coastal trapped, i.e. their amplitude is maxi...
متن کاملLong-wave forcing by the breaking of random gravity waves on a beach
This paper presents new laboratory data on long-wave (surf-beat) forcing by the random breaking of shorter gravity water waves on a plane beach. The data include incident and outgoing wave amplitudes, together with shoreline oscillation amplitudes at long-wave frequencies, from which the correlation between forced long waves and short-wave groups is examined. A detailed analysis of the cross-sh...
متن کاملNear - critical reflection of internal waves
Using a matched asymptotic expansion we analyse the two-dimensional, near-critical reflection of a weakly nonlinear internal gravity wave from a sloping boundary in a uniformly stratified fluid. Taking a distinguished limit in which the amplitude of the incident wave, the dissipation, and the departure from criticality are all small, we obtain a reduced description of the dynamics. This simplif...
متن کاملMODELING OF GROUNDWATER FLOW OVER SLOPING BEDS IN RESPONSE TO CONSTANT RECHARGE AND STREAM OF VARYING WATER LEVEL
This paper presents an analytical model characterizing unsteady groundwater flow in an unconfined aquifer resting on a sloping impervious bed. The aquifer is in contact with a constant water level at one end. The other end is connected to a stream whose level is increasing form an initial level to a final level at a known exponentially decaying function of time. Moreover, the aquifer is repleni...
